First Alert Forecast: Band of rain may damper Halloween plans

Fall-like conditions are coming to Southern California in the form of an October storm this weekend.

A system taking aim for the region could potentially put a damper on Halloween plans as rain may fall on Saturday. If that’s the case, it could make for Los Angeles’ first rainy Halloween since 2014.

“After we say goodbye to the tides, we say hello to all the clouds and the elements coming from the sky,” NBC4 Meteorologist Shanna Mendiola said. “We could get a chance of showers on Friday and then, Halloween weekend, looking like the rain is going to return.”

The timing of the rain is fluid since both meteorological weather models – the European Model (ECMWF) and the American Model (GFS) – are showing different forecasted times of arrival. As of Wednesday evening, the models are as forecast:

European Model (ECMWF)

  • Light showers may arrive on Friday, with the main band of rain arriving in the region Saturday night into Sunday.

American Model (GFS)

  • Rain may arrive on Sunday.

“As we get closer, they kind of start to agree with another and then we can get a better idea of when exactly this is happening,” Mendiola said. “But I can tell you for sure we’re going to have some rain this weekend.”

Until then, temperatures are expected to cool throughout the Southland through the weekend.
